New species of mushrooms discovered in Ladakh

Jammu, November 4:
Dean of the Faculty of Science, University of Jammu, Prof. Yashpal Sharma highlighted the diversity of wild edible mushrooms. The mushroom not only survives in harsh climatic conditions but thrives extensively. It is found in the high Himalayan cold desert regions of Kargil.

Their chemical analysis showed that they are high in anti-stress diabetes and fatty acids. It helps the cells maintain balance in extremely cold environments. Prof. Vivek Oberoi was speaking at the International Conference of All India Botanical Conference of Indian Botanical Societies at North-Eastern Hill University, Shillong.

In his lecture, Dr. Sharma shared his research findings on the topic Wild Food Fungal Diversity, Chemical Profiling and Kargil of Cold Desert Ecosystems. Many new species have been discovered during the research.
These include two new species, which are found only in the Ladakh region. These are economically important for the local people. These new species have been identified through morphological, taxonomic and molecular analysis.

More than 250 scientists and academicians from India and abroad participated in the seminar.
