Ladakh’s Director General of Police, S.D. Singh Jamwal, said on Saturday that an investigation into Sonam Wangchuk’s alleged links to Pakistan was underway. He said last month a Pakistani Intelligence agent was arrested who was sending videos of Wangchuk’s protests across the border.
DGP Jamwal identified Sonam Wangchuk as the mastermind behind Wednesday’s violence. Due to which four people dead and several others injured. On Friday, Wangchuk was detained under the National Security Act and sent to Jodhpur jail in Rajasthan.
DGP said that what has been revealed so far in the investigation cannot be made public at this time. However, Wangchuk’s speeches and activities clearly indicate his intention to incite people. He incited people by referring to the Arab Spring and the movements in Nepal, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka.
He said that foreign funding and FCRA violations are also being investigated. A Pakistani intelligence operative has been arrested, who was sending videos of the protests led by Wangchuk to Pakistan.
The police chief also termed some of Wangchuk’s foreign trips as suspicious. Wangchuk had participated in a program of a Pakistani media house ‘The Dawn’ and had also visited Bangladesh.
The DGP said that Wangchuk had become the face of the movement led by Leh Apex Body and Kargil Democratic Alliance demanding statehood and Sixth Schedule, but he tried to derail the dialogue process.
He said that an informal meeting was proposed between the Central Government and Ladakh representatives on September 25, but Wangchuk tried to spoil the atmosphere by releasing inflammatory videos and statements on the same day, which resulted in violent clashes.
The DGP said that three Nepali nationals have been hospitalized after being shot. The role of other suspected foreign nationals is also emerging.
