Leh, October 3:
Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Kavinder Gupta on Friday reviewed the security situation in the Union Territory of Ladakh. Meanwhile, all government and private schools (up to Class 8) reopened after nine days.
Officials said most restrictions have been gradually lifted as the situation improves. However, restrictions on gatherings of five or more people and mobile internet services remain suspended.
The curfew was imposed after violence erupted in Leh on September 24, leaving four people dead and several others injured. The administration gradually relaxed the curfew, first in two-hour slots. Then for seven hours on September 30, and later for the entire day from October 1.
However, mobile internet services remain suspended, and Section 144 (prohibiting the assembly of five or more people) remains in effect.
Police said 26 of the more than 50 people detained following the violence have been released on bail. The Kargil Bar Association abstained from judicial work for a third day in solidarity with those killed in the violence and announced a strike that would continue until October 6.
According to an order issued by the Leh District Deputy Commissioner, all schools up to Class 8, which were closed since September 24, reopened from Friday.
