Srinagar, May 6:
The excavation of the Zojila tunnel, one of the most strategically important projects in the country. It will be completed by the first week of June.
According to officials, the tunnel is targeted to be fully operational by February 2028. Once completed, it will completely transform the connectivity between Kashmir and Ladakh.
It solves the problems caused by heavy snowfall in the Zojila Pass especially in winter.
At present, the Zojila Pass remains closed for six months. It cuts off Ladakh from the rest of the world in winter. The tunnel will ensure year-round traffic between Kashmir and Ladakh.
Zojila tunnel will also speed up the logistical movement of the army.
There will be immediate supply of soldiers and heavy equipment in the border areas. The country’s defense will be stronger.
During the Galwan conflict, the logistics challenges at the ground level had further increased the importance of this project.
The tunnel is being excavated from two ends – the western portal on the Ganderbal side and the eastern portal on the Ladakh side.
The project is being executed at an estimated cost of Rs 4,500 crore.
