Modern and progressive farming is becoming increasingly popular across Kashmir. Amidst the rising cases of cancer, this initiative has emerged as a beacon of hope for many. Experts believe that the excessive use of chemical pesticides in apple orchards and vegetable cultivation can have a bad effect on human health. In view of these concerns, more and more farmers are now adopting natural and organic farming methods.
The main objective of progressive farming is to reduce the use of chemical pesticides and at the same time grow safe and good quality crops. It promotes the use of vermicompost, organic manure and other natural and home methods of farming, thereby maintaining soil fertility and reducing health risks.
Haroon Rashid of Shopian is an inspiring example of this change. He has designed a luxurious farming setup on the roof of his house, where he grows more than 100 types of vegetables and rare plants. These include many varieties that are not commonly found in Kashmir. Through his perseverance and innovative methods, he earns around ₹70,000 and also provides his family with fresh, chemical-free vegetables.
Haroon Rashid says that with a little effort and the right information, people can become self-reliant by adopting progressive farming, earn extra and provide safe, healthy and nutritious food to their families.
