Srinagar, November 5:
In a shocking case of fraud, a woman allegedly handed over fake cheques to several workers and looted jewellery worth lakhs of rupees, police said on Sunday.
Giving information about this development during a press conference jointly organized by goldsmiths in Srinagar on Wednesday, they said that in the last few months, at least three jewellers, Shah-e-Hamdan Ornaments in Lal Bazaar, Makadmi Jewels near Nava Kadal, and Zargar Jewelers in Soura, have fallen victim to this fraud in which this woman handed over fake cheques and cheated jewelry worth lakhs of rupees from these jewellers. The incidents took place between the end of July and the end of August this year, causing a total loss of over Rs 17 lakh.
Giving information about the method of cheating the accused woman, the goldsmiths said that the woman used to go to jewellery shops as a customer and take jewelry with fake cheques in their hands.
In one case, the Shah-e-Hamdan Ornaments in Lal Bazar reported a loss of jewellery worth around Rs 5 lakh on August 21, according to revelations made by the goldsmiths. The shop owner lodged an FIR at the Lal Bazar police station the next day. In another incident, a similar fraud took place on August 8 with Makadmi Jevrat near Kani Mazar, Nava Kadal, causing a loss of around Rs 5 lakh. The complainant lodged a report at the Bagiyas police outpost.
