The strike in Katra against the ropeway project entered the fourth day on Saturday. The protesters sitting on a hunger strike demanding the release of several people detained by the police. The Jammu Chamber of Commerce and Industry has extended its support to the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Sangharsh Samiti. The CCI has appealed to the administration to resolve the issue through dialogue. Earlier in the week, the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Sangharsh Samiti had called for a shutdown of all business activities in the area. On Friday night, the Samiti extended the shutdown by another 72 hours.
All shops, restaurants and business establishments have been closed since Wednesday, affecting normal life in Katra, where thousands of devotees visit the cave shrine of Mata Vaishno Devi every day. “We have extended the strike last night. It will continue for 72 hours until the government cancels the ropeway project,” a committee spokesperson said.
