Natrang’s National Theatre Talk Show, ‘Young Voices of Theatre’, on the Facebook page of Natrang featured National School of Drama alumni, theatre actor, director and designer Kanhaiya Lal Kaithwas in the 46th episode where he shared his inspirational thoughts with the global audience. Speaking about this unique talk show, Director Natrang, Balwant Thakur informed that this talk show which features outstanding young theatre practitioners is second in the series of highly meaningful online theatre happenings initiated by Natrang. First being, Natrang’s International Theatre Talk Show which featured 52 highly acclaimed senior theatre personalities of international repute and was successful in keeping the spirit of theatre alive in the time of the corona crisis.
In a statement issued to mercury times, 50 distinguished guest speakers who belong to different regions of the country being featured in this talk show include Abhishek Pandit, Bhasha Sumbli, Manish Joshi Bismil, Ravi Mohan, Gaurav Sharma, Vikram Sharma, Chandra Shekhar Prasad, Chakresh Kumar, Neeraj Kunder, Namrata Sharma, Kehar Singh Thakur, Himanshu Dwivedi, Sunil Soni, Ashish Deo Charan, Daksha Upadhyay, Sajal Mondal, Ravinder Sharma, Kanupriya Shankar Pandit, Rabijita Gogoi, Ashish Pathak, Sumeet Sharma, Mohd. Today’s guest Kanhaiya Lal Kaithwas started his career in theatre 30 years back in Ujjain with Baal Manch. He has to his credit 100 plays and directed more than 50 plays like; ‘Madhyam Viyog’, ‘A Mid-Summer Night Dream’, ‘Satya Harishchander’, ‘Chor Chakor’, ‘Lachhedar Guchha’, ‘Os ki Boond’, ‘Taaboot’, ‘Rustam Sohrab Kaagmuni’, ‘Bahrupiya’, ‘Karman ki Gati Nayari’, ‘Apna Rakh Paraya Chakh’, ‘Red Frock’, ‘Yatra Mukti’ etc. He worked with eminent theatre directors of the country like; Satish Dave, Bansi Kaul, B.V. Karanth, Bharat Sharma, Prabhat Ganguly, Naseerudin Shah, Kirti Jain, Anuradha Kapoor, Robin Das, Ranjeet Kapoor, Kirti Jain, Neelam Mansingh Choudhary, D.R. Ankur and Ram Gopal Bajaj etc. He worked on the clown methodology of famous Director Bansi Kaul for five years at Rangvidushak, Bhopal. He has also worked with the jail mates of Bilaspur for one month. He has participated in Asia Art Mahotsav with the play ‘Navlakha’ directed by Anuradha Kapoor in Japan. He has also performed in few films like; ‘Swaraj’, ‘Kolanchal’, ‘Wounded’, ‘Dharti Ab Bhi Ghoom Rahi Hai’ and TV serials like; ‘Kisse Ek Hazar’, ‘Premchand Ki Kahanian’ and ‘Sarita’ etc. as Art Director and Actor. Ministry of Culture’s Junior Fellowship holder, Kanhaiya has worked in the Central University, Hyderabad for four months, and also worked in NSD Repertory Company for two years. Honoured with ‘Kabir Samman in Madhya Pradesh. In Madhya Pradesh School of Drama, he remained as Assistant Theatre Director for four years. In the year 2018 honoured by the Madhya Pradesh Govt. with ‘Shikhar Samman’ and in 2019 awarded ‘Rang Parsai National Award’ for the creative works in the field of theatre. And presently serving as Associate Professor in the University of Hyderabad. In an interesting conversation with Natrang’s senior artist Neeraj Kant, Kanhiya narrated his eventful journey of theatre which started in his childhood. He nostalgically recalled his enlightening learnings from the great theatre master Padmashri Bansi Kaul whose teachings are intrinsic in Kanhiya’s personality. He explained about the clown methodology in which an actor is not dependent on just facial expressions, his/her whole body expresses the content. Other than doing brilliant acting, multifaceted and ardent theatre practitioner Kanhaiya has the reputation to create wonders in scenic/art design with minimum resources, he also shared some of the experiences of such ventures. Kanhiya, who has done substantial theatre with children, finds them more appropriate for learning as they come with no pre-conditions which facilitate their unfathomable growth. He also recalled his wonderful experiences of working with the Natrang team and appreciates them for their diligent and persistent quality work. To the young generation, he advises to have patience and commitment if they want to pursue a career in theatre and if they are able to do so, success will definitely greet them at the right time. Otherwise even brilliant talent proves to be futile if one is not committed, dedicated or is impatient.
