In the Dogra culture, the special significance of Shri Ganesh Sankashti Chaturthi (Bhugga) Vrat falls on January 29, 2024. In this regard, Mahant Rohit Shastri, Jyotishacharya and Chief of Shri Kalakh Jyotish avim Vedic Sanathan Trust, shared that this Vrat is observed for the protection of one’s children, longevity, fulfillment of desires, and peace from celestial influences. The Vrat is observed on the fourth day of the waning phase of the Magha month, known by various names like Sakat Chauth, Ganesh Chaturthi, Tilakut Chauth, Sankata Chauth, and Tilakoot Chauth.

*Worship Procedure*

During Bhugga Vrat, women first bathe and then perform the ritualistic bathing of the idol of Lord Ganesha with Panchamrit. They offer fruits, red flowers, akshat (rice grains), roli, mauli, durva grass, and then consecrate items made of sesame seeds or sesame and jaggery as Prasad. The moonrise in Jammu is at 09:25 PM. Afterward, the devotees observe a fast throughout the day, reciting the Ganesha mantra “Om Shri Ganeshaya Namah” 108 times. The fast includes abstaining from water consumption, making it a challenging observance. The day concludes with a special Prasad made from sesame seeds and jaggery.

*Results of the Vrat*

Observing Bhugga Vrat is believed to alleviate all sorrows of the devotee and bring material prosperity. It is thought to enhance happiness and prosperity from all directions. The worship of Lord Ganesha during this Vrat is believed to remove obstacles and bless the devotee’s children with success.

*History of the Vrat*

During the Mahabharata era, under the guidance of Lord Krishna, Yudhishthira, the Pandava prince, first observed the Sakat Chauth Vrat. Since then, women have been observing this fast for the success of their sons. Numerous stories and legends are associated with this Vrat.
