New Delhi, February 25:
Environmental activist Sonam Wangchuk wrote an open letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in which he appealed to play a leading role in the conservation of glaciers.
In the letter, Wangchuk described the condition of the Himalayan glaciers as serious. He said that if concrete steps are not taken to save these glaciers. Then the holy rivers may dry up and turn into sand by the next Maha Kumbh. Wangchuk said that these glaciers are the source of our rivers and their existence is in danger.
Wangchuk is working on the conservation of Himalayan glaciers. He traveled from Ladakh to Delhi and then to America. He started the journey by taking a piece of ice from the Khardung La glacier and wrapped it in special pashmina wool and kept it in a container.
Wangchuk wrote in his letter, India should play a leading role in the conservation of glaciers. As the Himalayas are the third largest reservoir of ice and icy water on Earth. After the Arctic and Antarctica and are also known as the Third Pole. (Agencies)
