The central government has increased the salary and allowances of MPs. Along with this, the pension of former MPs has also increased. The most important thing is that this increase will be effective from April 1, 2023. After the increase in salary and allowances, MPs will now get Rs 1,24,000. Earlier, MPs used to get Rs 1 lakh.
Now, the daily allowance of MPs has been increased from Rs 2,000 to Rs 2,500. The pension of former MPs has been increased from Rs 25,000 to Rs 31,000. This increase has been made under the powers conferred by the Salary, Allowances and Pension of Members of Parliament Act, 1954.
The additional pension for each year of service beyond five years has been increased from Rs 2,000 to Rs 2,500, a gazette notification issued by the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs on Monday said. The revision in the salary, allowances and pension of MPs has been announced amid the ongoing budget session of Parliament.
The earlier revision in the salaries and allowances given to sitting and former MPs was announced in April 2018. The base salary announced for an MP in the 2018 revision was Rs 1,00,000 per month. The purpose of fixing this amount was to bring their salaries in line with inflation rates and rising cost of living.
At the same time, as per the 2018 amendment, MPs get an allowance of Rs 70,000 as constituency allowance to pay for the cost of keeping their offices updated and interacting with voters in their respective districts. (Agencies)
