The Department of Sociology, GLDM GDC Hiranagar under the aegis of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav organized a lecture cum workshop on the theme Gender Sensitization: The Role in reforming the society. Dr. Malvika Upadhya, Sociologist and Post-Doctoral Fellow, School of Public Policy and Governance, Institution of Eminence, University of Delhi, was the resource person for the lecture/workshop. The activity was designed solely to educate students on the concept and context of Gender Sensitization. The lecture/workshop began with a welcome address by Dr. Arun Kumar, Head, Department of Sociology, in which he stated that Gender Sensitization has become a global concern and that it is the intellectual community’s responsibility to initiate discussions, debates, webinars, seminars, street plays, workshops, and conferences to educate the society.
Dr. Arun thanked the worthy Principle, Dr. Pragya Khanna, for her complete guidance in carrying out this activity on Gender sensitization. In his welcome address, Dr. Arun also introduced the resource person, Dr. Malvika, and invited her to begin the lecture/workshop.
In a statement issued to mercury times, according to Dr. Malvika, gender misinformation has become a major source of concern for social scientists. She went on to say that gender is a practical social reality, and any misconception about it can cause problems in society. She talked about the concept, theory, approach, and methods of Gender Sensitization. She defined Gender Sensitization as an effective process of changing stereotypical mindsets about men, women, and other genders in her brief lecture/workshop. It refutes the notion that men and women are unequal entities and emphasises the importance of viewing all genders as equals. Gender sensitization focuses on women’s issues and problems, arguing that gender bias is an impediment to progress and should be eliminated. Its goal is to raise awareness among both men and women. Because women have been enslaved by patriarchal notions for centuries, they must be sensitized to the fact that men and women are equal. Through gender sensitization, men acknowledge the contribution of women and do not act as a challenge to women anymore rather become their supporters in the socio-economic development. Gender sensitization is achieved through 4 steps- Change in perception, Recognition, Accommodation and Action. All this has to be achieved through a proper strategy- by identifying a target audience, having a methodology and working through a proper content to bring women empowerment and gender parity. The students asked various questions and became more aware of gender sensitization. The workshop concluded with a Valedictory address by Dr. Ravinder Singh, Faculty, Department of Sociology, who stated that Gender Sensitization is extremely important in society. Dr. Singh expressed gratitude to the speaker for her informative lecture and impactful workshop on Gender Sensitization. Dr. Singh expressed gratitude to the worthy principal, Dr. Pragya Khanna, for providing proper guidance and encouragement to carry out the activity. He also thanked all of the college’s faculty, non-teaching staff, and students for their active participation and making this activity a huge success.
