Mohali, April 18: A 65 year old Kenya businessman suffering from recurrent brain stroke was treated successfully with a challenging surgery Carotid endarterectomy (CEA) at Ivy Hospital, Mohali recently.
The doctors at Ivy realized that the patient with transient ischemic attacks (TIA), which were quite often the precursor of a major brain stroke, could have a debilitating and potentially fatal stroke at any time.
Dr. Harinder Singh Bedi, Director of Cardiovascular Sciences at Ivy said that there was a severe block in the artery going to the brain from where multiple clots were shooting up.
Dr. Bedi and his team took up the very challenging surgery of repairing the block. The anesthesia was given and the brain artery was exposed carefully. The block was removed and the artery was repaired with a patch.
Dr. Bedi further informed that during the surgery there was a risk of stroke as the artery has to be clamped to repair it. The tubes of the invention are connected to a heart lung machine and chilled water at 4 degrees C was circulated to cool the brain and to prevent any damage.
Post-surgery the patient made a complete recovery.
