Chlorine gas leaked from the water filter plant of Military Engineer Services (MES) in Sangoor area of Udhampur on Monday. This left around 1,000 school children and other people in a state of deep trouble for 15 minutes. At the time of the incident, there was chaos in a private school located 100 metres away. Around 1,000 children were present in the school at that time. The children were evacuated immediately.
According to the information, a strong smell suddenly started spreading in the area in the afternoon. When people had difficulty breathing, the police and fire department were immediately informed about it. The police reached the spot and closed the shops near the filter plant and stopped the vehicles going towards the military area. There is a common public school near the filter plant.
As soon as the gas leaked, some children in the class started having trouble breathing. The school management said that after the gas leak, a message was sent from the military area to evacuate the children from the school. After this, the children were taken to an open space outside the school and sent home in vehicles.
