The distance between the US and the European Union (EU) has increased on the issue of the Ukraine war. Meanwhile, China has planned to increase its relations with the EU. Recently, there was a heated debate in the meeting between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
China’s parliament ‘National People’s Congress’ (NPC) spokesman Lu Qinjian told the media on Tuesday that his country is ready to work with the 27-member EU against unilateral decisions. Lu said, “Facts over the past fifty years have repeatedly proved that there is no fundamental conflict of interests or geopolitical conflict between China and Europe, but they are partners who contribute to each other’s success.”
China wants to increase its relations with the EU, which it considers a profitable market for its AI-enabled electric vehicles and batteries. The EU has imposed heavy duties on Chinese e-vehicles to protect indigenous models.
EU leaders expressed solidarity with Zelensky after a heated exchange in a meeting with Trump. The video of the meeting was widely broadcast in Chinese state media. The Trump-Zelensky dispute comes at a difficult moment for China as the US president is warming up to his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin. This is a close ally of Chinese leader Xi Jinping, while pressing for an end to the war in Ukraine. There is concern in Beijing about the growing rapprochement between Trump and Putin. (Agencies)
