‘Theatre is beyond materials’ says Govind Singh Yadav in Natrang’s National Theatre Talk show

Natrang’s National Theatre Talk Show, ‘Young Voices of Theatre’ featured recipient of Sangeet Natak Akademi’s “Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Purskar” for theatre lighting, Govind Singh Yadav today who shared his inspirational thoughts with the global audience at the Facebook page of Natrang Jammu. Director Natrang, Balwant Thakur complimented all the brilliant speakers of this unique talk show who are highly acclaimed because of their outstanding work and stated that they all are contributing towards a bigger cause of theatre by sharing their precious thoughts with people who may drive immense inspiration and learning from it. In a statement issued to mercury times, born in 1978, Govind Singh Yadav, a trained theatre practitioner completed his two-year diploma in Dramatic Arts from Bharatendu Natya Academy (BNA), Lucknow in 2001 and three-year diploma in Theatre Techniques, Design and Direction from the National School of Drama, New Delhi in the year 2006. He is working as Stage Manager and Light Expert at National School of Drama Repertory Company, New Delhi. Recipient of Junior Fellowship from Ministry of Culture, Govt. of India, Govind had also completed one year diploma in ‘Kathak’ from NCZCC, Allahabad. He has directed a number of plays which include; ‘Aadhe Adhure’, ‘Khamosh Adalat Jari Hai’, ‘Duvidha’, ‘Ballabhpur Ki Roop Katha’, ‘Kabira Khada Bazaar Mein’, ‘Do Koudi Ka Khel’, ‘Halal Khor’, ‘Ajaat Ghar’, ‘Andha Yug’, ‘Chor’, ‘Bade Bhai Saheb’, ‘Murkh Guru Ke Chele’ and ‘Bholaram Ka Jeev’ etc. He has the credit of working in different theatre organisations and other educational institutions too.  He has been designing lights and sets ever since the early days of his theatre practice and is dedicated to light design in performances. He visited the National Theatre in Korea for six months to study light design and was a part of a cultural exchange programme. He has designed lights for plays at festivals in India and abroad.  He has designed lights at the Khajurao Dance Festival for ‘Kathak’ performance and also for various dance exponents like; Rachna Yadav, Krishna, Aanandita, Shivam Chauhan, Divya Diksha, Pooja Pant and Guru Rajender Gangani etc. He has participated in Bharat Rang Mahotsav as a director three times and also in other famous theatre festivals like; TFT Chandigarh, Sahitya Kala Parishad Festival, Urdu Akademi festival and Bhopal Theatre Festival etc. In an interesting conversation with Natrang’s senior artist Neeraj Kant, Govind narrated his journey of theatre. Shy by nature, Govind started doing theatre as a child artist and continued the passion as it offered personality enrichment to him. Other than acting or direction, he interestingly opted light designing. Moreover he found it a financially viable prospect. He asserts that lights affect the mood of the performance and enhance its overall impact. He also remembered watching a performance of Natrang’s landmark play ‘Aap Hamare Hain Kaun’ written and directed by Balwant Thakur which left a lasting impression in his mind.  Gagan who has done lighting for several prestigious events recalls that he got immense opportunities to work with the stalwarts while working in NSD and expressed his gratitude towards all those who have helped in shaping his artistic personality. He believes that designing is a continuous process, one has to keep on evolving to master it. Govind opines that in theatre, one has to give time and more the time is invested, more satisfying are the results and suggests to never count the returns in terms of profit and loss in theatre, rather try to experience the enlightenment to the self it has provided.  Natrang’s creative team who is managing this national event includes Suresh Kumar, Neeraj Kant, Anil Tickoo, Sumeet Sharma, Sanjeev Gupta, Mohd Yaseen, Brijesh Avtar Sharma, Gauri Thakur and Chander Shekhar. Sangeet Natak Akademi’s Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Awardee actor, Vikrant Sharma would be featured in this talk show on 20th of July, 2021.
