Amavasya occurs only once in the month, and the lord of Amavasya is considered as Pitru Dev (ancestor deity). Kartik Somvati Amavasya falls on Monday, November 13th. On this day, various religious activities related to offering to ancestors and other charitable deeds are performed. Mahant Rohit Shastri, Jyotishacharya, President of Shri Kailakh Jyotish avim Vedic Sanathan Trust,explained that from a religious perspective, this day involves offering Pinda to ancestors and performing other virtuous deeds. According to religious scriptures, individuals who take a sacred bath in rivers on this day will attain prosperity and be free from various diseases and sorrows. If unable to bathe in rivers, pouring Ganga water into household water and donating to the needy is also considered beneficial. Offering flour balls to fish in rivers or ponds on Amavasya is also considered auspicious. The commencement of Kartik Somvati Amavasya is on November 12th, Sunday,at 2:45 PM, and it concludes on November 13th, Monday, at 2:57 PM. Lighting lamps in the evening is considered auspicious.
*Remedies on Amavasya*
Observing a fast on Amavasya for the peace of ancestors not only satisfies the ancestors but also pleases deities such as Brahma, Indra, Surya, Agni, Vayu, Rishi, and animals. Amavasya is considered an auspicious day in astrology, and performing certain remedies on this day can enhance your well-being. Here are some recommended practices:
1. Taking a sacred bath in rivers or lakes during sunrise on Amavasya is believed to cleanse all sins and bring spiritual merit.
2. Donating sesame seeds, milk, and sweets made from sesame on Amavasya helps alleviate poverty.
3. Reciting specific prayers such as the Neelkanth Stotra, Sarpa Sukta, and Shri Narayan Kavach followed by a feast for Brahmins is considered beneficial.
4. Lighting a ghee lamp in the northeast corner of the house during the evening is believed to bring positive energy.
5. Feeding the poor, donating to charities, and offering meals to Brahmins are recommended on Amavasya.
6. Reciting the seventh chapter of the Bhagavad Gita dedicated to ancestors is suggested on Somvati Amavasya.

On Amavasya, it is advised to refrain from consuming tamasic foods, alcohol, and maintaining celibacy. Fasting individuals should avoid cutting hair and nails during the fast. Wearing black clothes and causing harm to others are discouraged. Performing positive actions and maintaining a positive mindset are emphasized.
