Jammu, November 19:
The Uttar Pradesh police has arrested Nazir Ahmad Wani, a prime accused in the 1993 Deoband bomb blast case, from Budgam district. According to officials, the arrest was made on Tuesday. Nazir Ahmad Wani, who recently contested against Chief Minister Omar Abdullah from the Budgam assembly seat. He was arrested by a team of Uttar Pradesh police with the help of Jammu and Kashmir police.
51-year-old Wani, who had mentioned business as his profession in his election affidavit, was out on bail in a 1993 bomb blast case in which four people, including two UP police personnel, were injured. Wani was arrested in 1993 but got bail in 1994. However, he absconded by not complying with the bail conditions.
A case of wrongful restraint and criminal intimidation was also registered against him in Budgam district last year. Wani had not mentioned the Deoband bomb blast case in his election affidavit. According to officials, Wani’s arrest is a significant step in the case and further legal action is being taken.
