Jammu, August 4:
Lt Guv of Union Territory Ladakh Kavinder Gupta and GOC of Army’s Fire and Fury Corps Lieutenant Hitesh Bhalla have expressed deep condolences on the demise of Ashok Chakra winner Chhering Motup.
Eighty-year-old retired Naib Subedar Chhering Motup fought as a soldier of the Army’s Ladakh Scouts in Operation Meghdoot. During that operation he has to recapture the peaks of the Siachen Glacier from Pakistan.
On 21 February 1985, he along with his team attacked the enemy in bad weather. He captured an Indian post in Siachen Glacier, Ladakh. For this extraordinary bravery, he was awarded the Ashoka Chakra.
His death on Sunday at the age of eighty has sent a wave of mourning in Ladakh. On his demise, the Colonel of the Regiment of the Army’s Ladakh Scouts and Jammu and Kashmir Rifles, Lieutenant General MP Singh, also expressed heartfelt condolences on behalf of all ranks of the regiments. On Monday, a huge crowd of people gathered at the house of Naib Subedar Chhering Motup to express condolences.
