Jammu, September 18:
The lawyer of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Mehraj Malik, who has been detained under the Public Safety Act (PSA), has refused to represent him in the court.
Senior advocate Nirmal K Kotwal confirmed his refusal from Mehraj Malik’s case on Thursday. He said, “I was not previously aware that he had allegedly made anti-national and pro-separatist statements. My responsibility is not only to my client, but also to the Constitution and the country.”
Mehraj Malik, MLA from the Doda constituency, is currently lodged in Kathua jail. He said, “When I decided to represent the AAP MLA. I knew he was detained under the PSA because he had used abusive language against a senior officer.”
His videos are constantly going viral, which I was previously unaware of. In several of Mehraj Malik’s videos, which are constantly circulating on the internet, he can be seen and heard saying that Jammu and Kashmir is not part of India.
He is also reportedly seen praising Burhan Wani, the terrorist killed in July 2016, and Pakistan-based terrorist Masood Azhar.
