At around 11:30 pm on Wednesday night, a speeding Maruti van without a permit hit Manohar Lal Baba, the head servant of Surgal Baba Devasthan, on Nangal Road in Ward No. 3.
Manohar Lal died on the spot.
Both grief and anger have spread in the area due to this tragic incident. The police have registered an FIR and started searching for the absconding accused. With the body of Manohar Lal Baba, the family and villagers reached the main bus stand of Katra and staged a protest for justice there. The protest continued for about 3 hours. During this time, police and administrative officials reached the spot.
Apart from this, district Congress president Bhupendra Singh Jamwal, Anil Sharma and leaders of other parties also reached the spot. He demanded that a license of a street vendor should be issued along with financial assistance for the upbringing of Manohar Lal Baba’s wife and three younger daughters so that the wife of the deceased can feed her children.
Tehsildar Katra Jitendra Singh, Naib Tehsildar as well as SHO Katra Ranjit Singh Rao, who reached the spot, interacted with the relatives of the deceased. Meanwhile, the traffic department announced an ex-gratia amount of one lakh rupees from the department to the relatives of the deceased.
After receiving the assurance, the relatives and people ended the protest at around 4 pm and left for the crematorium with the body for the cremation.
